Nuevo Arenal, Lake Arenal

Friday we arrived at our last stop in the town of Nuevo Arenal where we rented a house on Lake Arenal.  The lake sits at the base of the Arenal Volcano in the northern highlands of Costa Rica. It is the country's largest landlocked body of water, with a surface that covers nearly 33 square miles and a depth that reaches 200 feet. It is also the windsurfer's paradise in Central America! The lake also produces about 17% of the country's electricity with the remaining power produced by wind turbine farms.

The house we rented is called Casa Tranquila and sits on 10 acres of breathtaking beauty. The owner has truly created a bit of paradise with all the beautiful plants, trees, vegetation and walk areas. There are many Rainbow Eucalyptus trees. It sheds it bark and creates beautiful colors of orange, green, brown  and yellow. There is a walking path on the premises that is lined with them. There are many wild orchids and brome
liads growing on the trees.

While drinking my morning coffee yesterday I caught a toucan in one of the trees on the property. Later in the day while we were out exploring I caught a beautiful toucan in a tree off the side of the rode. That is definitely my favorite bird of costa Rica! I ran out of the car with the bananas I bought at the local market and my camera. (toucans like bananas) Ron was just shaking his head...

A few more shots of the property and Lake Arenal.
